The Clear Cut Quartet

As the second season of Music in the Woods concerts begins, it is a pleasure to present the Clear Cut Quartet, an unusual group of saxophone musicians.  The program will feature both transcribed and original works, as well as popular jazz standards.

The Clear-Cut Quartet evolved from musicians in the Cousino High School Music Department several years ago.  All four have received outstanding awards in Michigan State Competitions.

Christopher Klerkx, alto saxophone, is the spokesman for the group.  He sat first chair in the 2009 MSBOA All-State Band and 2009 MSBOA District Band.  A recipient of the John Phillip Sousa Band Award, is a second year philosophy and mathematics major at Michigan State University.

Lisa Kulawczyk, alto Saxophone, was nominated as Outstanding Soloist for the 2007 and 2008 Michigan Youth Arts Festival and in 2006 sat as second chair in the Central Michigan University Honors Band.  A third year architecture student at the University of Detroit/Mercy, Lisa plays also and tenor saxophone in the University Pep Band.

Beth Anne Kunert, tenor saxophone, plays in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Youth Jazz Program. She has played in honors bands at Wayne State University and Central Michigan University, and will play in the Michigan Youth Ensembles Band.  She attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and is a junior at Cousino High School where she plays in the Symphonic Band, Marching Band, and Jazz Band.

Emily Caretti, baritone saxophone, sat first chair in the 2008 and 2010 MSBOA District 16 Honors Band and has attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for the past three years as a jazz band major.  A sophomore dual-enrolled at Cousino High School and the Macomb Mathematics/Science Technology Center, Emily plays for the Cousino High School Marching and Jazz Bands.
