The book is The Life We Buryby Allen Eskens

Taken from the synopsis posted on

College student Joe Talbert is on a deadline to complete a writing assignment to interview a stranger and write a biography.  So Joe heads to the nearby nursing home to find a subject. There he meets Carl, a dying Vietnam vet – and a convicted murderer.  As he writes about Carl’s life, especially his valor in Vietnam, Joe cannot reconcile that heroism with the despicable acts of a convict. Thread by thread, Joe unravels the tapestry of Carl’s conviction.

Author Allen Eskens is a criminal defense attorney. This book received six different book awards for Best First Novel.
